Basement Masonry Phosphoric Acid Better For Masonry Cleaning - Phosphoric, Muriatic, Or Sulfuric Acid?
Better for Masonry Cleaning - Phosphoric, Muriatic, or Sulfuric Acid? - basement masonry phosphoric acid
I just bought a house and have a problem with the basement. The basement is constructed with a thick mortar 3 'stone wall. It is old and has decades of experience severe moisture. When I clean the basement, I noticed exposed layer of mortar flakes on the walls as if they were dirt. I thought I had to scrape the mortar around the stone mortar until firm. After surfing the Internet I found hydrochloric acid, but I do not think I want to treat this type of hazardous chemicals, if need be. The phosphoric acid may be a better solution. Do you believe that the phosphoric acid fixes the problem I? I know nothing of sulfuric acid that works better? After cleaning the grout, I would lay on the stone walls give a spot on a shiny appearance, and also prevent moisture in the basement. Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you.

Any acid will be diluted to reduce the danger. But I think your problem is the salt of the weak mortar. Removing a stiff wire brush and lots of elbow grease should lose all the mortar. You may need more mortar joints, where the gap is too big to add. A great tool to use to dig deeper. There are a number of seals that are used to reduce moisture, but if it sealed high humidity outside the wall and then drained. The cost for each loop will be very important if you are someone who wants the program I saw a regular cleaning and closing inside plan.
I have acid with good results. I am not used in a basement though. Phosphoric acid and sulfuric acid are also toxic. I would try an expert who will help you choose your brain for ideas to be found. I think the elbow grease and a stiff brush would do without acid. There are hunters in stone, but do not know whether to keep the moisture.
